European Robotics Week

Our team took part in the European Robotics Week with discussions, workshops and an exhibition of our mOway products.

The meeting was attended for technology teachers of Secondary education, Professional training, and instructors of workshops from the Basque Country.

It was a very productive day where the participants exchanged points of view and perspectives of the robotics role in the education environment.

They enjoyed the maximum of the event knowing mOway developments and their great potential as an educational tool in the classroom. They did some exercises with our MowayWorld software and controlled the robot with Scratch.

We can say that we fulfill the aim of the European Robotics Week: to improve the cooperation between educational technology resources industry and academic world.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the European Robotics Week. Together we join forces to support the use of educational technology tools in the classroom.

Robot Musicians

In a previous post we saw that quadrocopters (flying robots with four propellers) could make buildings in a future. Now we see that they can also play music.

In this case these robots have been developed by Vijay Kumar, from School of Engineering & Applied Science of Penn University (USA). During the demonstration they played different instruments such as a keyboard, a cymbal, a guitar, a tom and a sort of harp.

Robots had connected the elements to play the corresponding instrument.

For example, the tom robot had a stick connected to a little motor, which made the robot to beat the tom on the right moment. Keyboard was played by four robots, flying vertically down to push the keys.

Robots Look Themselves in the Mirror

Nowadays robots look more and more like human beings. This is shown by Qbo robot, which is able to recognize its own image reflected in a mirror.

Qbo robot has a computer vision system that makes possible for Qbo to recognize either another robot or its own reflected image. In order to distinguish between both cases, the robot emits a blinking sequence with a light placed over its “nose”: if the robot identifies its own sequence, this means that it is in front of a mirror.

Otherwise, it is in front of another Qbo robot and then they start a conversation through synthesized voice, microphone and speakers.

Flying Robots Will Construct Buildings

Dr. Raffaello D’Andrea from ETH Zurich has developed a flying robot for constructing buildings. This robot is able to locate, carry and drop the blocks that forms the structure to be built.

The robot is a quadricopter, which means that it has four propellers to travel. The position control of the robot is achieved through a motion capture system with a group of cameras. This system checks the position of the robot, modifies its trajectory and indicates the robot where to drop the block that is carrying.

A demonstration was made with four of these robots, which built a 1:100 scale model of a building with polystyrene bricks.
